Preparing for Year-End Financial Reporting

Year-end financial reporting pulls together twelve months of accounting into a set of statements that owners, lenders, auditors and tax authorities rely on. The businesses that find year-end straightforward are usually the ones that prepared for it steadily, rather than treating it as a single event in the final weeks.

Start with a plan and a timeline

Map out the key dates: when books will be closed, when schedules are due, when the auditor (if any) needs information, and when the statements must be filed. Working back from the filing deadline makes the workload visible and avoids a last-minute rush.

Clean up the ledgers early

  • Ensure every bank, receivable and payable account is reconciled.
  • Clear suspense and holding accounts.
  • Review the fixed asset register and record additions, disposals and depreciation.
  • Confirm that opening balances agree with last year’s closing figures.

Prepare supporting schedules

Auditors and reviewers work from schedules, not just the trial balance. Prepare supporting workings for:

  • Accruals, prepayments and provisions.
  • Revenue, including any work in progress or unbilled amounts.
  • Inventory, where applicable, with a basis for valuation.
  • Related-party and intercompany balances.

Review for completeness and consistency

Compare the current year against the prior year and investigate significant movements. Confirm that the accounting treatment of material items is consistent and appropriate, and that disclosures reflect the applicable reporting framework for the entity.

Keep good documentation

A well-organised year-end file — reconciliations, schedules, and explanations for significant judgements — speeds up any audit or review and gives management confidence in the numbers. It also makes the following year’s close and reporting easier, because the basis for each balance is already documented.
